APPLIQUE QUILT.
American, 3rd quarter-19th century, cotton. Rising Sun/Sunburst pattern hand appliqued and quilted. Red sashing and diamond border. 74" x 96".
"Lizzie Crater's Quilt" appears in ink on the front and on the reverse side a signature reads, "L A Crater." An accompanying note reads" ...made by Great-Grandmother Eliza Ballentine 1857".
Condition: Wear on binding and a few thin areas on red fabric.
In the outer corners of the border, pieced stars are quilted with tiny heart outlines at their centers. Fabrics include solid red and a butterscotch print. The blocks are 14 inches square; 3 +ö wide borders; 7-9 stitches to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. The quilt is handmade with appliquT and reverse-appliquT piecing. Batting is thin and even and the backing is muslin. Handed down in the Ballentine family (NY State).
