AP Wire Teletype From 22 November 1963 re JFK
Original Associated Press teletype from 22 November 1963, first announcing the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to the world. From Dallas, teletype begins dramatically, ''President Kennedy is dead. He died in a hospital after being cut down by an assassin's bullet while his motorcade was moving along on the outskirts of Dallas...There was a report that Vice-President Johnson also had been wounded, but this was denied by Mrs. Johnson. First word of the President's death came from two priests as they left Parkland Hospital's emergency ward, where the President was taken. Their announcement brought audible sobs from a crowd of scores of newsmen and other citizens...'' The next report follows on the same sheet, ''The President died at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time...Senator Ralph Yarborough of Texas...collapsed in sobs as he told of witnessing the slaying...He added: 'It seemed to me that at least two of the shots came from our right rear. I can not say about the third.'...The man being sought is described as a white man, about 30, of slender build, and weighing about 165. He apparently shot the President with a thirty-thirty rifle. Kennedy was only 46 and in his first term in the White House when he was killed. Mrs. Kennedy was riding with him when he was shot. She cried 'Oh, No' and grabbed him as he fell...'' Teletype measures 8.5'' x 24''. Light wear and toning, overall very good condition.
