<td width="100%">
Antique Wedgwood jasper blue and white trinket box or match safe, made in England, early to mid 19th century (pre 1880).

Measures 3 3/4 inches long. Approx 1 inch high.

Long shape with rounded sides. The lid and sides have a deep blue ground with superb quality jasper work. The lid has a border of mistletoe like foliage and berries around the rim. Star-like flowers on either side of a scene depicting two Classical mythological figures: 1 a Roman youth with a discus, naked except for a robe partially swathing his leg. He sits on a tree stump. NExt to him is an old, bearded man, presumably a Greek Elder, holding a viper / snake in one hand over a stove sprouting flames, next to a pillar with an urn on top. The sides of the box have stylised sheathes alternating with sunflowers in remarkable detail. One side has a fantastic scene of tiny putti / cherubs frolicking with a dog. Another miniature scene with dog, cherubs and putti - incredibly tiny and fantastically detailed, on the other side.

The quality of the jasper work is fabulous - totally diaphenous in parts and very detailed.

Inside of the box has ridges, indicating possible use as a match safe.

Impressed marks underneath say Wedgwood and England as well as impressed symbols.
Condition is very good with some negligle roughage on the rims (not visible when box is closed).
