ANTIQUE STATUS:Johnson & Bye "Defender" .32 Rim Fire Long Pocket Revolver. The "Defender" was one of Iver Johnson and Martin Bye's most prolific pocket revolver. In the early days of the Iver Johnson firearms production history, these small spur-trigger guns were the bread and butter of the fledgling firm. The "Defender" would be on the company product list until the early 1890's, the only change being the addition of "89" on the later models. Although Iver Johnson would later become better known for his many "safety" revolvers, shot guns and even bicycles and motorcycles, the "Defender" is one of his iconic creations from the beginning of Johnson & Bye. This specimen is the early "Defender" with rosewood birds head grips. It would have been made between 1871 and perhaps the early 1880's, while Martin Bye was still a partner in the business. It is in very fine condition, with 85% original nickel, flaking mainly on the right side of the frame by the trigger. The grips are very fine, undamaged and showing minor handling marks and a few dents and dings. The action is crisp and accurate, the cylinder cycles and locks up as it should. 2 1/2 " barrel. S/N 184
