ANTIQUE RAILROAD BROADSIDE FOR THE PORTLAND AND

KENNEBEC RAILROAD DATED 1869 (MAINE). Paper broadside with black lettering is from Portland and Kennebec Railway, commencing Monday, May 3, 1869, two trains daily between Augusta and Boston. This was originally chartered in 1836 as the Kennebec-Portland Railroad to run from Augusta to Portland; 60 miles with a nine mile branch to Bath. Opened up October 1849 and completed to Augusta in 1851. The Somerset and Kennebec RR from Augusta to Skowhegan, was 37 3/4 miles and was leased and operated by the Kennebec and Portland RR. In 1862 this company was reorganized as the Portland and Kennebec RRR, running 100 miles from Portland to Skowhegan, with a nine mile branch to Bath. In 1870 the Portland and Kennebec RR was leased to Maine Central RR and purchased by Maine Central RR in 1874. This part of Maine Central was known as the lower road. The Kennebec and Portland RR was built in standard gauge (4' x 8 1/2"), the original Maine Central Railroad was 5' 6" gauge. In 1871 the Maine Central Wide Gauge was changed to the now standard gauge, 4' x 8 1/2". SIZE: 29 1/2" h x 22 3/4" w (including the frame). CONDITION: very good. (05-265/JJ). $600-1,200.
