ANTIQUE NORTHWEST COAST CARVED WOODEN FIGURE, TLI
ANTIQUE NORTHWEST COAST CARVED WOODEN FIGURE, TLINGIT, 19TH CENTURY. Long beaked avian figure with frog held in tip of beak. Character of surface carved, parallels that of early Northwest coast sculpture in that small, regular divots set up a uniform and pleasing surface texture in the wood. Bird's face, beak, eyes, wings, and tail, and the frog are highlighted with black, red, or light green paint. Consignor states that he was told and believes that this fiugre may have been used by a Shaman. SIZE: 11 tall. CONDITION: One feather of bird's left wing broken, breakage on top of frog's head; right side of bird's head, fronts of feet, and tail feathers broken. Multiple minor chips and general surface abrasion apparent; paint has a wonderful old look and is worn and wonderfully patinaed. 4-55167 (7,500-15,000)"
