Antique Japanese Satsume shallow bowl with incredibly fine painting, gilding and enamelling. Sold to me as 18th century, it is certainly over 100 years old. 1 of 2 from the same collection.
Measures 9 1/2inches in diameter and 2 inches high.
Side profusely decorated with a tight pattern of scrolls, clouds, geometric and naturalistic forms in gold, white, red and green enamel on a deep earthy red ground. An unusually large group of aristocrats, engage in a variety of pursuits fill almost 3/4 of the bowl: one group is engaged in a drinking ceremony, some play Go, many read from books and scrolls, some with gold outlined fans. A child sits next to a pool and watches the koi fish swim. Detail of costume and faces is extraordinary.
Behind the people are various pagodas and walls with a beautiful naturalistic landscape in the background. Very fine detail to all parts of the painting, a lot of gold and enamel highlights. Great design.
Back shows clear signs of good age. No chips/cracks (checked with blacklight). Gilding on rim (only) is worn.
Previous owner had assessment done by a major auction house for $6000.-
