Antique beaded necklace in the form of a snake, biting it's own tail. Bought in Paris, France and dates to late 19th or early 20th century.

High quality beaded jewelry was also made in Austria by the Wiener Werkstatte and achieved high acclaim in Paris, where it was all the rage during the early

20th century.

Measures 22 1/4 inches long.

The snake is made of a soft material entirely covered with beautifully crafted white and golden brown beads. The clasp is in the snake's mouth. It works by

pushing gently on the eye area, which will open it and then it snaps shut when released. It can be closed over any part of the length, accordingly it can fit

any sized neck. Very sensuous. The Victorians were highly enamoured with snakes in general, both for the symbolic significance as well as the sensuous,

elegant beauty of the form. This is a particularly fine example.

High class beadwork was the rage in Paris in the early 20th century and this example exemplifies the high standards and great artistic design of the period.
The clasp has a patent number and works well. The snake necklace is in very good condition.
