This early 19th century 6 drawer apothecary chest is 46 1/2" long x 18" deep and is 27" high. The front has a 5" mopboard with a molded top edge at the base and the sides have cut-outs at the base. It is all Chestnut with basswood as the secondary wood. The drawers have fine dovetailing and champhered bottoms...the wood knobs are the originals. The top has a thumb-nail molded edge and at one time possibly had a back splash as there is a 3/4" space at the back edge of the top. There have been several old repairs and a break to the bottom of the side feet that should be mentioned and there has been old reinforcement made to the underside. The entire chest is original, including possibly the finish which shows wear from age, and it is stable with the drawers working fine. The heavy Chestnut graining is in a mellow old color which makes the surface resemble grain painting. This chest is c.1830 - 50 and is probably of Vermont origin.
