An interesting KKK promotional CDV, circa 1868, entitled: "Radical Members of the So. Ca. Legislature" that was designed to enflame passions against the Federal Government's effort to reconstruct South Carolina's state govnerment. The image depicts 65 members of that state's legislature of whom approximately 50 are black or mulatto. Two of the images in the composite read: "President, Lieut. Gov. Booze 40 acres and a mule" and "Judas Moses who raised the Confederate flag on Fort Sumter". On verso is a list identifying each man, but sans the derogatory statement that appears on other contemporary examples, in part: "...22 read and write (8 grammatically), the remainder (41) make their mark with the aid of amanuensis. Nineteen are taxpayers to an aggregate amount of $146.10. The rest (44) pay no taxes, and the body levies on the white people of the State for $4.000.000...". The Ku Klux Klan trial of 1871 uncovered that many of these men had been terrorized by members of the infamous organization with their testimony helping to prosecute many Klansmen. Two minor stains affects the albumen in the lower right corner, else very good.
