ANONYMOUS PORTRAIT OF JOOST SCHMIDT, STUDENT OF THE BAUHAUS SCHOOL
ANONYMOUS PORTRAIT OF JOOST SCHMIDT, STUDENT OF THE BAUHAUS SCHOOL "Schmidtchen von Bauhaus" inscribed in blue ink on verso vintage gelatin silver print 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. (8.3 x 8.3 cm) 1928 PROVENANCE Galerie Berinson, BERLIN Private Collection, NEW YORK Born in 1893, Joost Schmidt was an important student and teacher at the Bauhaus in Dessau. A multimedia designer, Schmidt focused his attention on both practicing and teaching sculpture and typography during his 14 years at Dessau. Schmidt was responsible for the poster design advertising the 1923 Bauhaus exhibition at Weimar. The poster illustrates the ideas of the New Typographers, which emphasized clarity, functionalism, geometry, asymmetry, and the respect for empty space. These ideas were an extension of Constructivism, a movement rooted in rationalism and the combination of art and technology. These same ideas are subtly expressed in this portrait. There is no extraneous information, simply a white background. Wearing perfectly round glasses, the artist is sitting slightly off center. The frontal approach with strong side-lighting also illustrates the design elements that were important to Bauhaus photographers and designers at the time this photograph was taken.
