ANONYMOUS AFTER BREAKFAST, BAUHAUS CANTEEN numbered "24" with various other numerical notations in pencil on verso vintage gelatin silver print 33/16 x 21/16 in. (8.1 x 5.2 cm) 1928 ESTIMATE: $1,500-2,500 PROVENANCE Marzona Collection, GERMANY Rudolf Kicken Gallery, cologne Private Collection, GERMANY Robert Miller Gallery, NEW YORK Private Collection, NEW YORK This photograph may simply appear to be a banal snapshot of people enjoying the sunshine on their balcony, but it was made at the Bauhaus, the school that sought an alliance of art and technology. While it is surprising that during the first ten years of the Bauhaus no photography courses were taught there, it does seem natural that its denizens would be sensitive to the play of light and shadow on the architecture and know how to use a camera to render it. This splendid anonymous photograph is reminiscent of pictures made there by others, including Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, the Bauhaus' most influential figure in the history of photography. This photograph is characteristic of a certain Bauhaus vision. One is directly faced with an urban landscape constructed by a shadow on the balconies which creates a distortion between reality and fiction. It is only the human presence on the balcony that brings the photograph back to a figurative level.
