British progenitor of Gothic novels, including The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794). Extremely rare ANS in third person, 1p, 8vo, “China-terrace, Thursy. morng.” n.y. Addressed in her holograph on integral leaf to publisher “Messrs. Longman & Co.” In full, “Mrs. Radcliffe requests an answer to the letter sent to Mssrs. Longman & Co. on Tuesday last...” Wax seal traces at left corners; o/w in very good conditon. Her obituary has been neatly laid beneath text, annotated in contemporary hand. Second such annotation at top margin of integral leaf well above address. Quaritch, in their Catalogue 1087 [item 327, 1988), notes the scarcity of Mrs. Radcliffe’s autograph, “...there is nothing whatever, for example, in the very representative collections of the British Library, the Morgan [since rectified], or Harvard. Robert H. Taylor sought her for many years, and made do with a tiny scrap of social appointment. Yale possesses (a recent purchase) a book with her marginalia, and we know of no other examples.” Very desirable.
