(20 x 4 cm) 1964 ESTIMATE: $7,000-9,000 PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist by the current owner, NEW YORK LITERATURE ANDY WARHOL PHOTOBOOTH PICTURES, NEW YORK, 1988, pl. 110 (variant illustrated) In June of 1963, in the midst of searching for a summer job, Gerard Malanga met Andy Warhol at a poetry reading and was almost immediately hired as Warhol's painting and silkscreening assistant. To Malanga, this began as simply a summer job, since he actually had not previously heard of Warhol and had every intention of returning to school in the fall. However, after spending a summer working in the 87 th street firehouse, two blocks from Andy's house (where he and Andy would occasionally stop by and enjoy lunch prepared by Andy's mother) he flew to Los Angeles, and worked with Warhol for seven years. Nearly every Warhol silkscreen created between 1963 and 1970 was produced by Malanga, including Death and Disasters, Liz Taylor, etc. Malanga also assisted Andy with his film ventures and became a key performer in some of his early movies, such as Vinyl and Kiss. Malanga later became the editor of Warhol's magazine INTERVIEW and introduced Warhol to the Velvet Underground, who consequently commissioned Warhol to design the album cover for The Velvet Underground & Nico.
