ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) STATUE OF LIBERTY signed and dated "Andy Warhol '86" on the overlap synthetic polymer paint and silkscreen on canvas 72 x 72 in. (182.8 x 182.8 cm) executed in 1986 Estimate: - $500,000-700,000 PROVENANCE Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, PARIS EXHIBITED PARIS, Galerie Lavignes-Bastille, ANDY WARHOL: TEN STATUES OF LIBERTY, 1986, no. 5 (illustrated) On the occasion of the centennial anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, Andy Warhol returned to a subject matter that he used on two paintings in 1963. Unlike the early versions, which are full-length images of the statue, the artist used a close-up shot of the head for the late series. He also included the logo of the biscuits Fabis, which bears the French and American flags, celebrating the friendship between the two nations. The Statue of Liberty, donated by the French to the American people in 1886, is the most striking testimonial of that friendship. The original group of paintings included ten works using different colors and camouflage, all signed and dated. They were exhibited in Paris in the spring of 1986 at the Galerie Lavignes-Bastille. In addition to this group, six other silkscreen paintings and five handpainted works were completed by the artist. Those 11 paintings were exhibited at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris in the spring of 1999.
