(139.1 x 106.7 cm) Estimate: - $900,000-1,200,000 PROVENANCE Gallery Bruno Bischofberger, ZURICH Akira Ikeda Gallery, TOKYO Lang & O'Hara Gallery, Inc., NEW YORK "Warhol's paintings of Marilyn Monroe relate topically to her suicide on August 5, 1962, which immediately preceded the works. His [Warhol's] earliest statement on the subject linked her with the origins of his "Death" series: 'I guess it was the big plane crash picture, the front page of a newspaper; 129 Die. I was also painting the Marilyns, I realized that everything I was doing must have been Death' (Art News, Nov. 1963). The Marilyns also coincided with his first photo-silkscreened paintings. In Popism, he noted that he 'started doing silkscreens' in August and that 'when Marilyn Monroe happened to die that month, I got the idea to make screens of her beautiful face - the first Marilyns...'"
