Warhol appropriated the flower image from a photograph of seven hibiscus blossoms printed in the June 1964 issue of Modern Photography. The silkscreened image was cropped to include four flowers in a square arrangement, and the blossoms were painted in an array of Day-Glo hues. The works premiered at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York in November of 1964.
