ANDREW JOHNSON
(1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Partly-printed D.S. as president with STAMPED signature "Andrew Johnson", 1p folio parchement, Washington, Mar. 23, 1867, the appointment of WILLIAM M. WHERRY as Colonel by Brevet from Mar. 13, 1865 for "...galant and meritorious services during the war...". Co-signed by EDWIN M. STANTON whose signature is also stamped. Folds, light pencil notes at bottom, else fine. William M. Wherry (1836-1918) was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on Aug. 10, 1861, where he "displayed conspicuous coolness and heroism in rallying troops that were recoiling under heavy fire" while serving as a First Lieutenant of Co. D, 3rd Reserve Missouri Infantry.
