ANDREW JACKSON
(1767 - 1845) Seventh President of the United States, "Old Hickory" became a national hero in his defense of New Orleans and as president encouraged Western expansion and paid off the national debt. Good content early A.D.S. "Andrew Jackson" adding rank as major general of militia, 1p. 8vo., Fort Strother [Ten Islands, Mississippi Terr.], Dec. 14, 1813. At the height of the Red Stick, or Creek War, Jackson issues a general order. In part: "...Capt. Reynolds commanding at Fort Deposit [a supply depot of 1,200 men in the Miss. Terr.] will receipt to [?] Genl. William Hall of the Tennessee Volunteers for 180 stand of arms with their accoutrements which were drawn from Hampton & from Madison County, or [?] many thereof, with their accoutrements as may be delivered to him by the 3rd Volunteers...". The balance of the text was stricken by Jackson, but it appears to refer to whom should be charged for the arms, and makes reference to additional stands of arms. Boldly signed, expertly inlaid to another sheet. Very good. The Creek War (1813–14) began as a civil war within the Creek nation. U.S. forces became involved by attacking a Creek party in present-day southern Alabama at the Battle of Burnt Corn. The war ended after Jackson in command of combined state militias, Lower Creek and Cherokee defeated the Red Sticks at Horseshoe Bend. In the end, the Creek ceded more than 20 million acres of land from southern Georgia and central Alabama.
