<b>171. ANDREW JACKSON </b>A.D., unsigned, 1p. 4to., [ n.p., n.d.], an abstract of a petition presented to the Senate. In part: "<i>...The Memorial of Josiah Watson & wife the aged parents of Lt. Watson of the Navy late deceased states that they are aged & infirm & from misfortunes have been reduced to poverty, that their late deceased son was their only prop & support of their declining years, and part of his pay their only support, by his death they are reduced to want and throw themselves upon the humanity of that country in whose service their son died - and prays to be provided for in the same manner that other parents have been whose sons have died in the service of the Nave of the U. States...</i>". At the bottom of Jackson's petition appears a four line note, in unknown hand, but bearing the penciled signature "<i>W. Hayden</i>". The handwriting of Jackson is identified and submitted on request to be presented to the Senate of which Jackson was a member at the time. With this document is a three-page, handwritten, unsigned manuscript of Sen. James Lloyd of Mass., identified again by a six line handwritten note of Hayden, stating: "<i>...It is his abstract of a Report - made by the Committee of Naval Affairs, of which he was Chairman - on the petition of Josiah Watson...</i>". Lloyd's abstract states that the Committee had refused the petition on the grounds that "<i>...the sense of Congress on the inexpediency of extending pension allowances, or pecuniary grants to cases of this description, having been too distinctly, & repeatedly expressed to be misunderstood, the Committee ask leave to be discharged from the further consideration of the subject...</i>" and recommend that the Petitioners have leave to withdraw their petition. Partial fold separations, repaired on verso, miniscule loss on lower right corner, light toning, otherwise very good condition.<b> $400-600</b>
