Andrea Soldi, who was born in Florence, and is first recorded painting portraits of British Merchants of the Levant Company in Constantinople and
Aleppo. He settled in London in 1736 where he developed a good business
as a portrait painter, being particularly favoured by the 2nd Duke of Manchester and the 4th Viscount Fauconberg, becoming a Fellow of the Society of Artists in 1766. The success he enjoyed as a portrait painter reflected the novelty of his style, which was particularly remarkable for its light and attractive colouring, sound draughtsmanship,
and lively costumes. His work was
however eventually eclipsed by that
of his contemporaries Thomas Hudson, Allan Ramsay and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
The carver responsible for the early 19th Century frame, J.M. Ibbetson is recorded in Richmond in the 1820's (G. Beard, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p.470)
