This work is most probably a study for Derain's Pantagruel illustrations realised in 1943. Derain created in total 128 different woodcuts to illustrate the Pantagruel story and these are considered to be one of Derain masterpieces.

Note: Pantagruel is a very famous book "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel" written by Francois Rabelais in the 16th century. It tells the story of two giants a father (Gargantua) and his son (Pantagruel) and their adventures, written in an amusing, extravagant, satirical vein.
