ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ (American, b. Hungary, 1894-1985) MY MOTHER'S HANDS signed and dated "A.Kertész, 1937" in pencil on verso two artist's stamps: "André Kertész" and "André Kertész, 67 W. 44th St. NY" on verso vintage gelatin silver print 9 3/4 x 7 3/8 in. (24.8 x 19.3 cm) 1937 PROVENANCE From the artist to a Private Collection, North america (since 1975) At several points in his career, Kertész photographed hands to serve as a portrait. Notable examples include "Paul Arma's Hands," 1928, which hold a pair of glasses, and "Elizabeth and Me," a 1931 portrait of Kertész and his wife where, in later croppings, he is represented only by his hand on her shoulder. The photograph most commonly known as "My Mother's Hands" was made in 1919 before Kertész left his native Hungary. It is a similar clasping of hands and also features a wedding band. As Kertész's mother died in 1933, the photograph in this lot is perhaps an allusion to the 1919 image. Between 1936 and 1939 Kertész made a number of distortion photographs of smaller subjects than the nudes he had concentrated on in 1933. The large mirror necessary for making the nudes was too cumbersome to transport to New York. He had brought the smaller of his two distortion mirrors with him to America in 1936 and used it for this photograph.
