ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ (American, b. Hungary, 1894-1985) ESZTERGOM, HUNGARY titled, dated and signed "Esztergom, 1916, A. Kertész" in pencil on verso vintage gelatin silver contact print 2 1/16 x 1 5/8 in. (5.2 x 4.1 cm) 1916 PROVENANCE Sotheby's NEW YORK, October 5, 1995, Sale Number 6747, Lot Number 354 Private Collection, SWITZERLAND LITERATURE ANDRÉ KERTÉSZ: PHOTOGRAPHE, Paris, 1987, p. 17 (illustrated) Kertész was working at the Budapest stock exchange when he began to photograph as a hobby in 1912. He acquired an ICA camera that made tiny glass-plate negatives measuring 4.5 x 6 cm. At most, he would make a few contact prints from the negatives and only made enlargements from some of them several decades later. This photograph was made in Esztergom, where Kertész endured a long hospitalization for a bullet wound sustained during the First World War. This beautiful little contact print depicting a lone figure strolling under tree branches exhibits some of the characteristics of Kertész's mature work, such as an atmosphere of melancholy, the strategic positioning of a figure in the landscape, and an integrated composition, here largely dependent on the framing of the trees and their branches.
