ANDERSEN ( Hans Christian ). In Spain. Translated by Mrs. [Anne S.] Bushby. Richard Bentley, 1864FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRANSLATION, with 8 attractive engraved plates of views after various artists including Leith Hay, Bonnington, and Vicars, pages (4), 306, large 12mo, original brown cloth, gilt, edges gilt : an attractive copy.The first edition in English of one of the best of his travel books : an edition which is rare in commerce. A keen traveller, Andersen published several other long travel accounts in which he took heed of some of the contemporary conventions about travel writing, but always developing the genre to suit his own purposes. Each of his travelogues combines documentary and descriptive accounts of the sights he saw with more philosophical diversions on topics such as being an author, immortality, and the nature of fiction in the literary travel report.ALSO WITH THIS LOT: (1) ROBBINS ( Archiibald ). A journal, comprising an account of the loss of the brig Commerce, of Hartford (Con.) James Riles, master, upon the western coast of Africa, August 2nd, 1815 ; also of the slavery and suffering of the author and the rest of the crew, upon the Desert of Zahara, in the years 1815, 1816, 1817 ; with accounts of the manners, customs, and habits of the wandering Arabs ; also, a brief historical and geographical view of the continent of Africa. Fifth edition. Hartford. Published by Silas Andrus … , 1818. With a folding map (misfolded and frayed on the outer, eastern, side, with slight loss), 275-pages, 12mo, contemporary, presumably original, sheep, gilt ruled spine, with red label, gilt: with the usual light browning throughout, but still a good to very good copy in a custom-made, fleece-lined folding quarter morocco library case, with fully gilt and lettered spine.(2)TRAVEL; EUROPE; SPAIN; WOMEN WRITERS; TRANSLATIONS; AFRICA; WEST AFRICA; SHIPWRECKS; NAUTICAL; ; ;
