This ancient bronze shield boss is likely Greek in origin and dates from 300BC to 250BC. It could easily be associated with Alexander the Great or the Seleucid Kings of western Asia. Notes included with the artifact indicate the piece may have been found near Caesarea, Syria on March 1o, 1911. It was later purchased from the Hammer collection about 1937. The shield measures 5 1/8" in diameter and has 4 equidistant rectangular holes, 3 of which are filled with iron oxide. CONDITION: the shield has an excavated bronze patina as one would expect. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (02-24706/BF). $300-500.
