ANCIENT CEYLON: Anonymous, ca. 668-740, AE unit (3.61g), Mitch-813, Pallava inspired "Lion and Pot" type coinage, lion facing right with one paw uplifted and tail curved over back // large flower pot between two lamps, Fine, R. Attributed in Ceylon Coins and Currency by H. W. Codrington, Colombo 1924, page 83 Chapter VII - Mediaeval Indian to Pallava. Mitchiner (The Coinage and History of Southern India; Part II, Tamilnadu - Kerala [London 1998] p.136, #308) attributes these coins to the Cholas and date them from the period when the Cholas were in the ascendant over the Pandyas during the reign of Parantaka Chola I (907-955). These have been found at various archaeological sites in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
