Imperial Roman, Septimius Severus, Gold Aureus, 7.07g, Obv: Bearded and laureate head of Severus to right, legend “SEVERUS PIUS AUG”, Rev: facing head of Gorgon (demoness) Medusa with wings and snakes coming out of her hair, legend “PROVIDENTIA” around (RIC# 285 listed as RRR). Pierced twice in typical Indian style, extremely rare.
As a type, this is an extremely rare coin. But having been exported to and circulated in India, it has had a historical piercing treatment. Interesting to note that the piercings are made to show the bust of the king upright when worn as a pendant and although the reverse also carries a bust, it was not preferred for display possibly because it is of a mythical demoness.
