American Numismatic Association. ANA MEMBERSHIP CARDS ISSUED TO M.A. POWILLS FROM 1929 TO 1947. Twenty cards, including every year from 1929 to 1947, with two cards present for 1946, indicated when Powills switched to a Lifetime Membership. Through 1936, the cards are entirely filled out by hand; beginning with 1937, the member’s name, number and address is typewritten. All cards are signed by the ANA General Secretary by hand: Harry T. Wilson, M. Vernon Sheldon and Lewis M. Reagan are the General Secretaries represented. Fine. A neat group of ANA memorabilia, complete for the period covered. Powills joined the ANA in 1929, so the set is complete through 1947. Today, few coin people recognize the name of Chicagoan Michael A. Powills (1906-86). He was extremely active in American Numismatic Association politics and affairs (he ran unsuccessfully for the Board twice in the late 1940s), however, making his set of membership cards all the more desirable.
