An exceptional example, with massive walrus grips of Balkan form, the gilded tangband set with seven fluted corals, with green glass stones in the bolsters. The broad, single-edged recurved blade with narrow fullers, inscribed in a silver cartouche, WORK OF MEHMET, OWNER MUSTAFA AGHA and the year, 1279 (1862/3 c.e.) The wooden core of the scabbard covered entirely with finely embossed and chased silver, the locket heavily gilded, filigreed and set with 67 fluted corals, above eagles, snakes and numerous human figures together with, MASH’ ALLAH (God’s blessing!) with characteristic dolphin’s head finial. Mid 19th century. Grips slightly loose. Overall length 75 cm.
