AN OIL ON CANVAS OF AN ELEGANTLY-DRESSED WOMAN

19th century. Signed and dated verso "Painted by C. Curtis 1854" (Calvin Curtis, American, 1822-1893), further with the stamp "Goupil and Co./Artist`s Colourmen/289 Broadway/New-York". Depicting a distinguished woman in satins, lace and jewelry, seated on an elaborately carved and upholstered chair. Curtis studied at the National Academy beginning in 1841, and also under Daniel Huntington. After painting portraits in New York for some years, he went to Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1850, and afterward to Stratford. He was known for his exquisite portraiture, and his works include depictions of such 19th century luminaries as Chief Justice Thomas B. Butler, General W. U. Noble, Judge C. B. Beardsley, and Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Hewitt, among others. Sight size 33"h x 27"w
