Probably Spanish. Verso with two old ink labels, "Mr. Washburn/The Foster-Farrar Co./Northampton Mass." and "Frank Washburn/Sept. 2, `30". The Golden Fleece is an order of chivalry founded in 1430 by Duke Philip III of Burgundy to celebrate his marriage to the Portuguese princess Isabel of Aviz. It was modeled on the English Order of the Garter, but dedicated to Saint Andrew. Sight size 23 1/4"h x 19 1/2"w The canvas detached from the stretchers on 3 out of 4 sides. The front with a 1/2" x 1/4" "L"-shaped tear in the upper right corner, minor abrasions and losses to paint in the upper left corner, lower right quadrant and on the chain of the Order, a pinprick of loss to the true left cheek, four dime-sized areas of inpainting on the man`s chest and scattered pinheads of same overall. The back lower 1/3 of the canvas with staining not visible on front.
