It was known to Roman builders and was revived in Italy during the 17th century. John Evelyn noted its use when he visited the Palace of Hieronymo del Negros at Genoa on 7 October 1644: 'In the house I noticed those red plaster floors which are made so hard and kept so polished, that for some time one would take them for whole pieces of porphyry'.
