AN IMPRESSIONIST OIL ON BOARD, "SADDLE ROCK IN SUNLIGHT", BY HOWARD RUSSELL BUTLER

Signed l.r.c. H.R. Butler (American, 1856 - 1934), verso pencil-inscribed with title and artist name. With a partial label from "Favor, Ruhl & Co. Boston/New York". Howard Russell Butler was born in New York City in 1856, and studied law before turning to art in 1884, studying with Frederick Church at the Art Students League in New York City and in Paris. He was founder and first president of the American Fine Arts Society (1889-1906) and was elected to the National Academy in 1902. Butler lived in California from 1905-07 and 1921-26, then Princeton, New Jersey until 1934. He is best known for his paintings of solar eclipses and seascapes, however, he also painted portraits and landscapes. He exhibited at the San Francisco Art Association in 1914 and the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, where he won a silver medal; his works are in the collections of, among others, the National Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum.
