AN IMPORTANT OTTOMAN GOLD AND SILVER INLAY 'BOZDOGAN' MACE, 18TH C.
This 18th century Ottoman mace, 'bozdogan' in Turkish, is exquisitely detailed with floral imagery in shimmering gold and silver damascene across every metal surface of the piece. The head of the mace is shaped similarly to a pomegranate and has, in addition to the aforementioned floral imagery, a damascene Arabic inscription encircling its pointed tip. The head is joined to the wooden shaft via a cylindrical metal section, also decorated. The haft itself has remnants of its original red fabric cover and is reinforced with a slender rectangular metal spine held to the shaft via five rivets. The octagonal metal handle is damascened as well and is capped off with a ring at its base for easy carrying.

L:22 in., (56 cm.)

Considering the age the inlay is very well preserved. The Arabic inscription on the top is legible. The original fabric around the shaft has been partially lost.
