AN EMBOSSED LEATHER PHOTO ALBUM WITH FRAGMENT OF MARTHA WASHINGTON'S WEDDING DRESS
Album dates to the 1860s
The album containing 37 carte de visite photos, many subjects identified, and a piece of gold silk damask inserted into oval photograph sleeve, identified with the inscription "A piece of Martha Washington's Wedding Dress. Presented by her great-granddaughter, Mrs. Kennon of
Gerogetown, D. C." Another note inside the front cover, "Presented to Mrs. Ashley Sampson by her friend Miss. Wightt, Rochester Oct, 1863."
PROVENANCE:
Martha Dandridge Custis married George Washington in January of 1759. For the festivities of the day she wore three different gowns. It is generally believed that she wore a gold damask gown during the actual wedding ceremony. The silk fragment in this album matches a number of examples of the wedding gown in the collections of Mt. Vernon and the Huntington Library. Several samples share the same provenance. Mrs. Kennon, Brittannia Wellington Kennon (1815-1911), was the daughter of Martha Custis Peter (daughter of Martha's son Jacky) and Thomas Peter of Georgetown. Mrs. Kennon was well known for her interest in artifacts associated with her grandparents. She carefully catalogued and numbered the Mt. Vernon-associated objects in her home and presented many small Washington associated articles to friends. A note from Mt. Vernon accompanies lot. Purchased from the Walter Knott Collection, 1965.
