AN ARABIAN PENINSULA ISLAMIC SILVER AND GOLD MOUNTED POWDER HORN, 19TH C.
The crescent-shaped body of this powder horn is of silver and is finely decorated with silver beadwork and lace throughout. The lid of the horn is decorated with many interlocking embossed semi-circles on its front, and three lines of diamond shapes on its back. The topmost part of the lid is surmounted by four silver balls.
The front of the powder horn bears four circles of silver lace. Within each of these four circles sits a gold cartouche with floral imagery, the bottom cartouche also appears to show some form of architecture in the background.
The outside ridge of the horn is adorned with many silver studs set within a border of thin lace. The inside curve has an adjoining piece that acts as an attachment point for hanging the horn from one's person. This piece is crescent-shaped as well, and is stamped with many nearly identical floral shapes along its length. Attached is a silver ring with a flower-shaped head from which the chain is hung.
