AN AESTHETIC MOVEMENT CARVED OAK EXTENDING DINING TABLE, ATTRIBUTED TO AUGUST GRASS, late 19th ...
AN AESTHETIC MOVEMENT CARVED OAK EXTENDING DINING TABLE, ATTRIBUTED TO AUGUST GRASS, late 19th century. With eight leaf insertions - 26 1/2 in x 54 1/4 in x 54 in (unextended) 143 1/2 in extended. Note: This table and accompanying set of chairs were part of the original furnishings of the "O" Street Mansion, located at 2020 O St., NW, Washington, D.C., near Dupont Circle. Strong similarities exist in the design the carvings of the interior mantles, fire surrounds and architectural woodwork of the O street mansion and the Christian Heurich House, (now Home of the Washington D.C. Historical Society). This suggests that both have been executed by the same hand, Washingtonian Cabinet and Fine Art Furniture Maker August Grass, whose work at the Heurich House is well-documented. Mr. Grass worked in the style American Renaissance Revival, using varying forms such as carved and applied arabesques and grotesques as seen in the frieze of the table and crest rails of the chairs. $8,000-12,000
