AMMI M. FARNHAM AMERICAN 1800S IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING. American (1845 - 1922). "Untitled" (Woman on Hillside), circa 1887. Oil on canvas, 18 x 24," in wonderful period gilt frame measuring 30 x 36." Signed lower right, with old label from the 1887 Chicago Exposition on stretcher. He studied in Munich with Frank Duveneck where he associated with other ex-patriot American painters including William Merritt Chase. After serving as Curator of the Buffalo Academy of Fine Arts for many years, he settled in San Diego, California in 1886. He became known as the "dean" of the San Diego artists and continued to paint there until his death. The present oil retains the original 1887 Chicago Exposition label which means the work was likely completed about that time and was probably painted during his first year in California. The exhibition tag is from, what was officially called, the Interstate Industrial Exposition which was started in 1872 in order the bring the finest national art to Chicago and "The West." Farnham was a regular exhibitor in these annuals. In this extraordinary work, Farnham, like Chase, abandoned the dark, brooding palette of his Bavaria years in favor of a brighter and livelier mix of local American color.
