AMES MODEL 1860 STAFF & FIELD OFFICER’S SWORD & SCABBARD. Has gilded brass hilt with shield eagle decoration on kidney-shaped counter-guard. There is a hinged guard on the reverse side that is operated with a button and spring and decorated with military shield. Knuckle-bow is decorated with floral motif at center. Top of pommel is floral decorated. Sharkskin grip is wrapped with twisted brass wire. Blade is marked on ricasso “Ames Mfg. Co./Chicopee, Mass.” Blade is ornately decorated and marked “U.S.” Brass drag on scabbard is decorated with eagle and star on reverse. Because the sword’s scabbard has three rings, it most likely dates to the early 1870s. Scabbards with two rings are indicative of the Civil War period. Total length: 35 ¼”, Blade length: 28 ¾”
