[AMES MANUFACTURING CO.] America’s oldest sword manufacturer founded in 1791 by Nathan P. Ames (1803-1847) in Chelmsford, MA, becoming the foremost supplier of edged weapons in America. In 1836 a foundry was added to cast bronze cannon and church bells. Archive of correspondence, 16 ALsS, 1838-50, mostly addressed to Nathan’s brother James G. Ames, who headed the company after Nathan’s death and successfully guided its fortunes through the American Civil War. Penned by business associates, family members and friends, letters mostly address business and family matters. A very small sampling: While Nathan was away on a business trip in Europe in 1840, Charles Peck authorizes a sight draft to be drawn by P. Harmony & Co. for his salary. From London, John W. Cochran advises on Dec 8 that “Your Brother N[athan]. is in Paris. I have called upon Messrs. Thomas Rhodes & Sons & left the package...Steam tomorrow for Paris when I shall see N.P. I return in Jany. & will see you as I shall have work to be done...” On Dec 8, 1845, G.C. Ewing of New York renews a friendship and responds to a request “if we could do some business for you in South America. It would afford us much pleasure to be the medium of any business intercourse...in Brazil or elsewhere...We intend to keep an assortment of hardware, or sell on commission for a few such houses as yours, but our main business will be selling the manufactures of B & F Fairbanks & Co...” and asks Ames to reciprocate with introductions on proper occasions.
