<B>AMERICAN TONALIST SCHOOL</B></I><BR><I>Landscape,</B></I> circa 1900-1920<BR>Oil on panel<BR>18-1/2 x 24-1/4 inches (46.9 x 61.5 cm)<BR>Unsigned<BR><BR>The subtle nuances of color gradation within a relatively narrow range of hues signals this work as an example of American tonalist painting from the early years of the 20th century. While a particular name cannot be attached to it, the work reflects the techniques favored by tonalists--specifically the practice of glazing portions of the image with translucent layers of pigment to soften the contours of objects and suggest rather than define a mood.
