published 1836-1838. Thirteen parts of the first printing of this classic work, bound into 2 volumes, approx. 15" x 21", half-lea. over "leatherette" cloth, gilt page edges. Complete through part 13 - the sections issued in the 1830s. Apparently many collectors gave up when no further parts appeared to be forthcoming. Part 14 wouldn't be published until 1841. Volume I has its table of contents, Vol. II does not, since they were issued with the last parts of each vol. Vol. I does have the revised War Dance text (issued with part 8). Typical "mixed state" issue: "War Dance," State A; Vol. 1 title page, State B; Red Jacket, State C.

Arguably the most important series on early 19th century American Indians, McKenney & Hall's impressive portfolio of Indians documents an important period of American history, even more so because many other images were later lost (Caitlin's in a warehouse fire; King's and Lewis' in the Smithsonian fire). While the publication nearly bankrupted McKenney and two printing firms, the quality of the work meant that the copies that survived are still vibrant.

Condition: Small tear on "War Dance," title page of Vol. 1 had several tears, "Mo-Hon-Go" also had tear. All have been professionally repaired. Boards somewhat worn, some evidence of sunning and mold on front board (does not smell musty - probably stabilized/cleaned when tears repaired). Many plates have typical text "shadow". Text pages not toned, slight foxing. Paper of plates slightly toned. Ink still bright. Binding fine, no cracking or weakening of hinges as is so typical of leather.
