Closely penned ALS, 4pp, 4to, Paris, Apr 26, 1850. With original transmittal cover having a scarce Hotel forwarder’s stamp and penned “<i>Via Eng. & Cunnard Steamers</i>.” In very small part, “<i>Is it possible that I am addressing you from this great French metropolis...associated with the names of great historical characters, conquerors of nations, revolutions, fine cooking and kid gloves [?]...took up our abode at the Hotel de Bedford, where we contemplate remaining for the next four weeks or more...You can live very comfortably here in Paris for $4. pr day, but in London, it costs $8 to 10...We left Malaga, Spain in the Spanish Steamer Gaditano, for Marseilles...She was commanded & manned by Spaniards, none of whom could speak English...The steamer only pursued her course during the night-time, stopping days at the different places along the coast for passengers to go on shore to see the ancient cities along the Spanish coast, at every one of which the people predominated in about the following order: soldiers, beggars and priests...While in Malaga, I delivered...my letters of introduction to Loring & Co., extensive wine dealers. They treated us with great attention & took us out riding...breakfasted...at a little village where once stood a Roman City & where they frequently dig from the earth Roman relics. We rode on horseback and had the most elegant & magnificent horses I ever saw. They were immense black chargers with heavy bushy tails hanging to the ground & full flowing manes parted in the middle...The Lorings have the same carriage that was built for Prest. Harrison in Baltimore. They bought it in Baltimore after Harrison’s death...remained two nights in Marseilles & then took seat in a diligence & R. Road cars across the entire country of France for Paris...I called at the office of Livingston & Wells the other day to look at an American paper.</i>..” Much more content. Boldly penned and signed. Clark continues his letter by filling up the entire inside of the transmittal envelope. VG.
