ALLENDER PATENT COUNTERFEIT GOLD COIN DETECTOR. An exceptionally scarce fulcrum scale, patented by J. Allender with pans marked for $10, 20, 5, 2.5 and 1 gold dollars. The counter weight is missing, which is almost always the case with these scales. This example marked "Patent Pending" and likely dates to 1851-53; Allender also patented one model in 1855 that included slot for a $3 coin. Fine condition, but dirty!
