ALLEN, WILLIAM WIRT
(1835 - 1894) Confederate major general who wounded at Perryville and commanded a brigade of cavalry with Wheeler at Atlanta. War-date L.S. "Wm. W. Allen" adding rank, 1p. 4to., Daniel Hill, Apr. 24, 1864, concerning the removal of incompetent officers from the army, in part: "…constituted for Kelley's division in accordance with an act of Congress…to relieve the army of Disqualified, Disabled, and Incompetent Officers…I would respectfully designate…Capt. Partridge Co. C 10th Confed. Regt…Lt. Conant…Lt. Wood…[and] would be pleased to have [them] examined…". Allen lists several other officers in a most unusual document written at a time when the Confederacy could use all the manpower it could get. Left margin tear has been repaired with archival tape affects two letters of text, minor bleeding to the signature, else very good.
