The prints in this lot were made in 1990, when ALLEN GINSBERG: PORTRAITS was published by Ginsberg, Raymond Foye and Jack Woody. At the time of printing, Ginsberg inscribed text and negative date information below each image. The printing was shared between three printers: Sid Kaplan, Brian Graham and Ed Grazda, all of whom are noted on the verso of their respective prints. The negatives were made between the years of 1953 and 1986 and most sat untouched until the mid-1980s when a cataloguing process was implemented and the scope of Ginsberg’s photography could be fully realized. Ginsberg’s friends and acquaintances were some of the most influential of his day, including the principal figures of the Beat Movement. “My motive for taking these snapshots,” Ginsberg explained, “was to make celestial snapshots in a sacred world, recording certain moments in eternity with a sense of sacramental presence” (Allen Ginsberg, ALLEN GINSBERG, photographs, california, Twelvetrees Press, 1990, n.p.).
