ALFRED WUNNENBERG
(1891 - 1963) General of the Waffen-SS and commander of the 4th SS Police Panzergrenadier Division, awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. Participated in the battle of France and Barbarossa, later commanded the IV SS Panzer Corps. War-date D.S., 4pp. legal folio, Berlin, Feb. 16, 1945, the original award document proposal for the Knight's Cross of the War Merit Cross with Swords to Police General OTTO WINKELMANN. The proposal reads, in part: "...Winkelmann has been deployed in Hungary since 19 March 1944 as Higher-SS and Police Fuhrer...he created the preconditions such that the intended betrayal of Hungary did not occur. The measures taken by the military, the police, and the security police...were so thoroughly prepared by him that the events of 16 October went off as planned...contributing decisively to the total participation of Hungary in the battle against Bolshevism...". Boldly signed and dated on the first page. File holes, else very good. OTTO WINKELMANN (1894-1977) was a general of SS police sent to Hungary in early 1944. Likely on orders from Eichmann, he facilitated the transport of Hungarian Jews to Auschwitz and other killing centers. At war's end, he commanded German combat forces in Budapest.

Estimate: $400 - 500.
