ALFRED STIEGLITZ MAGIC LANTERN CUP.
ALFRED STIEGLITZ MAGIC LANTERN CUP. Whiting Manufacturing, sterling silver, two-handled loving cup, 5.5" tall, 7.5" wide from handle to handle. Side of cup engraved with the names of the winners of the lantern slide championships of the Camera Club of New York for the years 1897-1904. Winners include W(illiam). A. Fraser, C.T. Berry, Wm. D. Murphy (two years in a row) and M.W. Seaman. In 1898 and 1903 there were no winners. Base engraved below the waist "Lantern Slide Championships Camera Club of N.Y. Presented by Alfred Stieglitz." "The past twelve months of the Camera Club of New York, will without question, be known in the pages of its annuals as "The Lantern Slide Year" Alfred Stieglitz declared in 1897 (Anthony's Photographic Bulletin. 1897, 28:314-319). While lantern slides were viewed with disdain by some fine-arts photographers, many found the slides superior in detail and highlights than other processes. In the same article Stieglitz singled out William Frazer, for his night photographs in New York (his name appears on this cup). A rare, and significant trophy from the history of photography. Lip of cup opposite engraved side with a noticeable, though easily repairable crimp.
