This portrait of Katharine Rhoades was made around the time of her exhibition at Stieglitz's gallery 291 where she had been a regular visitor for five years. She contributed to both CAMERA WORK and 291. According to Stieglitz's biographer, he was both in love with and intimidated by her, and later, she had an affair with Edward Steichen. A few months after her exhibition at 291, Rhoades moved to Washington, D.C., in the fall of 1915, where she worked for Charles Freer and helped him establish the Freer Gallery of Art, now part of the Smithsonian Institution.
